Topics and Goals:

The topic of the meeting aims at taking novel developments and challenges in our field of drug discovery into account. We increasingly understand what makes us different as individuals; however, can we also use this information to develop more specific, selective or even personalized therapeutic approaches? Which mechanisms regulate gene expression and determine the phenotype beyond the genotype? On the molecular level we have seen many new structures of GPCRs in the last year, but - from these individual complexes - how much can be learned about the general principles of their activation and biological function? Furthermore, how can we exploit these structures to identify novel binding sites for small molecule drugs? Fragment-based drug discovery has been established as routine tool in lead generation. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether there is a way to equip such fragments with selectivity towards individual targets. Along the same lines, do we have concepts on how to maintain or improve selectivity during optimization? Water is perhaps the most versatile but also most cumbersome "individual" in the field of drug discovery. It can drive promiscuity or selectivity, yet to what extent do we consider this outstanding probe in our drug discovery strategies and predictive computer tools? The workshop is intended to address these and similar questions by expert presentations and by fostering discussions among the attendees.
